Interested volunteers MUST
fill out a Volunteer Application. All volunteers must have
their own dog to participate and this animal must be
compatible with other dogs and like children.
What is Canine Literacy?
Canine Literacy is a National program focusing on elementary
aged children with reading problems. The Canine Literacy
encourages these children to read to selected dogs.
How does Canine Literacy help children with reading problems?
Children are at ease with a dog and do not feel the peer
pressures of the classroom. Mistakes are met with a wet,
slobbery dog kiss, thus, increasing self esteem.
What do the volunteers do in this situation?
Volunteers accompany their personal pets and channel all
questions, reading errors, vocabulary, etc. thru the animal.
When children are encouraged to talk to “their” dog, they appear
to be more relaxed and confident.
How is the Humane Society involved in this program?
The Humane Society currently has a very successful Pet Therapy
program. Many of the selected dogs are chosen out of the Pet
Therapy program. Additionally, the Humane Society conducts
Canine Good Citizenship testing and the dogs that pass this test
are encouraged to sign up for Canine Literacy.
What is the time commitment?
Volunteers are asked to commit approximately one hour per week
for a six week period.
When will the next Canine Literacy begin?
We hope to set up the program and begin in the Fall of 2005.
How do I become involved as a volunteer?
If you are a current volunteer @ the Humane Society then contact
Judy Phillips @ 367-3335 or
jjp@omniglobal.net.
If you are not currently involved as a volunteer and are
interested in the Canine Literacy program, stop by the Humane
Society and fill out a volunteer application. You will be
contacted. |
